VISUAL ANALYSIS
VISUAL ANALYSIS:Is a method of understanding design that focuses on thevisual elements and principles. In its strictest definition-a description and explanation ofvisual structure for its own sake.Yet the purpose of visual analysis can also recognise thechoices that a designer made in creating the design, aswell as to better understand how the formal properties ofa design communicate ideas, content,or meaning.
PHASE 1: OBSERVATION
- Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
- The observation phase is about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
PHASE 2: ANALYSIS
- Analysis requires you to think about your observationsand try to make statements about the work based on theevidence of your observations.
- Think about how the specific visual elements that you'veidentified combine to create design principles thatcomplete that work of design/art,and the effects on theviewer.
- How are your eyes led through the work and why?Applythe design principles knowledge you have learnt.
PHASE 3: INTERPRETATION
- In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
- What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created

Visual Analysis
This design work is in portrait format. In the centre,There is a vase with a spring scene in it, with a willow tree and a fisherman in a rowboat. On the left side of the painting, there is a willow in a vase. On the right side of the painting there are two birds that are chasing each other. As for visual elements, the main colours green, black and white.Overall,This is not a colorful piece, but the use of white space allows us to present the elements through imagination where there are not many. For example, the author does not paint a river, but the movement of the fisherman rowing his boat and the reflection shows that there is a river in the picture.
This design is symmetrically balanced. The emphasis is on the central image - the View from the Vase - rendered in the brightest hue, looking back at the viewer. The image is surrounded by black in the shape of a symmetrical vase. The black of the image contrasts in color with the green in the center of the image, adding to the feeling of vibrancy. You can see two flying birds in the upper right corner of the picture, which gives me the impression that they are flying around the vase. The author has used only a few elements to make up this one image, which is very harmonious and all the elements are blended appropriately. There is proportion in the layout, creating hierarchy – first, First we see the vase or the scene in the vase, and second we see what is around the vase.
This is a very vibrant piece of artwork that makes you feel spring. The author paints the landscape of Jiangnan in China, which makes me feel immersed in the scene. This picture is a poetic Chinese ink painting. In the picture, a willow tree reaches down diagonally from the upper left corner and stands out against the black background. The green leaves on the branches of the tree sway gently in the breeze, as if the sound of rustling can be heard. The whole picture is in black and white with some green elements to create a sense of tranquility and peace. This color scheme is in line with the characteristics of traditional Chinese painting, but also makes people feel very comfortable and calm.Overall, this work conveys a sense of praise and reverence for the beauty of nature through its simple yet meaningful language.
Inspiration
1.Contrast:I think you can enhance the contrast, in terms of color. The image as a whole uses black, and green, and I think the fisherman's cloak or hat could be made red to add contrast to the image.Like this image, it enhances the presence of the figure in the picture.

2.Emphasize:You can paint some background around the vase, and I think you can paint one of those run-down, gold and gold scenes to emphasize the protection of the environment.

SKETCHES

Fig 2.5 |
For the first sketch Fig 2.5 I use the artistic principle of contrast, using contrast in color and highlighting the figure. The red color worn by the figure contrasts with the surrounding green and white, which can emphasize the figure in the painting even more.

Fig 2.7 |
For the Fig 2.7, I used asymmetrical balance. Let the symmetrical house be placed in the back in front of an asymmetrical tree. Wanted to express the willow tree more, so the willow's are more of a part of the drawing. The ratio of the house looks smaller while the ratio of the willow tree is bigger. This can make one feel carefree and happy. It gives the first sense of spring.
FEEDBACK
week 5:
Additional sketches are needed for ‘why this element is reflected’. Change the second sketch as it is similar to the original. Finally, choose Sketch 2 as the final work for Task 3.
