Lecture
Week 2: Exploration & Environmental Storytelling

Before class, the professor reviewed last week's material with us.

Fig 1.1 Recap(Week 2,2025/9/30)

The Concept of Environmental Narrative:

Stories are conveyed through the environment rather than direct exposition.

Players piece together the narrative by exploring objects, spaces, and atmosphere.

Fig 1.2 Key Elements(Week 2,2025/9/30)

In class, the teacher had us work in groups to analyze two different images, aiming to help us understand environmental storytelling.

Fig 1.3Exploration as Narrative Structure(Week 2,2025/9/30)

Traditional Narrative: Linear progression, where players receive the story in a fixed sequence.

Exploration-Based Narrative: Non-linear progression, where the sequence and interpretation of the story depend on the player's exploration path.

Story Unfolding Approach: Players no longer passively receive the narrative but actively uncover it.

Through different exploration sequences, each player may gain a unique story experience.

Player Roles and Experiences:

Players may assume the role of an observer (immersing themselves in the atmosphere) or a detective (actively seeking clues).

Narrative clues may originate from sounds (recordings, echoes), objects (letters, diaries), visual symbols (wall patterns), environmental remnants, and more.

Fig 1.4 Visual & Audio Cues(Week 2,2025/9/30)

Environmental storytelling uses objects, spaces, and atmosphere to convey narratives, allowing players to actively piece together the story rather than passively receive it.

Exploration is central to the narrative: players gradually understand the story through discovery and interpretation.

Design principles: Maintain clear clues, layer the narrative, provide natural hints, and create an emotional experience.

Design principles: Keep clues clear, maintain narrative layers, provide subtle hints, and create emotionally resonant experiences.

In class, the professor taught us some basic operations in Unity3D.

FEEDBACK

In class, we learned the basic operations of Unity3D. We learned how to create a tree, how to change an object's material and color, and also how to add lighting.
