LECTURES
Week 1 Module Briefing
-Core Definitions of VR and VFX
• VFX: Images created or processed outside of live-action footage, including CGI, background painting, and compositing
• The difference between VR and VFX: VR provides a sense of “immersion,” while VFX creates an emotional sense of presence
-Key Design Considerations
VR creates spatial environments, while VFX imbues those environments with emotion and interactive feedback, compensating for experiences that cannot be achieved through spatial design alone.
Week 2 Immersion, Presence and Design Directions
-Core Definitions
• Immersion: Deep engagement in an experience, where attention is drawn to the environment and awareness of the outside world is reduced; commonly observed in activities such as reading, watching movies, and daydreaming.
• Presence: The user’s perception of being physically present within a given environment, resulting in a genuine sense of being there in relation to the medium or imagined space; this concept is more closely associated with virtual reality (VR).
-Three Categories of Presence
• Spatial Presence: The sensation of being surrounded by the environment, creating the experience of “I am in this space.”
• Social Presence: The sensation of others being present, with virtual characters or avatars providing a sense of real-time social interaction.
• Self-Presence: The virtual body or viewpoint belongs to the user, creating the experience of “This is me.”
Week 3 Narrative in Virtual Reality Environments
Week 4 Human Perception and Spatial Experience in VR
Week 5: Tracking, Spatial Input & Interaction
Project 1
The teacher asked us to create a 3D model using a doll. The tutorial told us to ask the AI, so I did, and eventually found the simplest method: download the Scaniverse mobile app, scan the doll, and once it’s done, export the file from your phone to your computer and import it into SuperSplat.
